Night The Doberman Just Won Dog Of The Year

Craig Campbell was walking his 10-year-old Doberman named Night on a familiar trail near Calgary when he suddenly found himself face-to-face with a grizzly bear sow and her two cubs emerging from the bushes. In those terrifying seconds, Campbell managed only two thoughts: “This can’t be happening” and “I’m about to die,” realizing he wouldn’t get his bear spray out in time as the massive predator approached. That’s when Night flashed forward and placed himself directly between his owner and the seven-foot bear towering on its hind legs, crouching and barking with such courage that it gave Campbell precious seconds to arm himself before the bear huffed and returned to her cubs.

Campbell credits years of training Night in Schutzhund, a German sport used to prepare police dogs, for why his Doberman ran toward danger when most dogs would have fled with their tails between their legs. The incredible act of bravery earned Night induction into Purina’s Animal Hall of Fame for 2025, Canada’s longest-running pet recognition award, complete with a medallion, a ceremony in Toronto, and a year’s worth of free pet food. Campbell, reflecting on having an animal that literally stood between him and death, said there’s no better friend than that, proving the phrase “man’s best friend” isn’t just a saying but sometimes a literal description. Despite his heroics and intensive training, Night remains a playful dog who loves nothing more than jumping into streams and watching minnows swim through his paws, showing that even the bravest heroes know how to enjoy life’s simple pleasures.
