Once Dubbed the Ugliest, This Fish Just Won Big in New Zealand

Once dubbed the world’s ugliest animal, the blobfish has made a stunning comeback—this time as New Zealand’s “Fish of the Year.” The annual competition, organized by the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust, aims to raise awareness about the country’s unique marine life. Despite its gelatinous appearance, the blobfish captured the hearts of voters, winning the top spot with 5,583 votes.

The race was close, with the orange roughy leading until a last-minute push from New Zealand radio network More FM. Hosts rallied support, declaring it was time for the blobfish to shine after years of being overlooked. Found in deep waters off Australia and Tasmania, the species remains vulnerable due to environmental threats.

Kim Jones, co-director of the trust, called it a battle of two quirky deep-sea creatures, with the blobfish’s “unconventional beauty” sealing its victory. The contest highlights the importance of protecting marine life, especially as climate change threatens delicate ecosystems. With its newfound fame, the blobfish proves that sometimes, even the most unlikely creatures deserve their moment in the spotlight!
