The race was close, with the orange roughy leading until a last-minute push from New Zealand radio network More FM. Hosts rallied support, declaring it was time for the blobfish to shine after years of being overlooked. Found in deep waters off Australia and Tasmania, the species remains vulnerable due to environmental threats.
Kim Jones, co-director of the trust, called it a battle of two quirky deep-sea creatures, with the blobfish’s “unconventional beauty” sealing its victory. The contest highlights the importance of protecting marine life, especially as climate change threatens delicate ecosystems.
