One Man’s Mission to Record Every Birdsong in Ireland

In the quiet corners of Ireland’s wild landscapes that 36-year-old Seán Ronayne is capturing something that could soon be lost, birdsongs. With over 200 species across the country, the Cork-based ornithologist has recorded 199 so far, driven by a lifelong love of nature and a deep concern for its decline. Ronayne’s project began in 2020 and has since grown into a national story, gaining widespread attention through a documentary and viral clips online. But for him it’s not about fame, it’s about conservation.

As intensive farming and habitat loss continue to threaten Ireland’s wildlife, Ronayne hopes his recordings inspire action to protect what remains. Diagnosed with Asperger’s as an adult, he credits his intense focus for helping him stay committed to the project, as well as his partner, Alba, who encouraged him to pursue ornithology full-time. With just a few birds left to record, Ronayne says the growing interest from young people gives him hope.
