Philly Trolley Operator Spreads Positivity, One Ride at a Time

In Southwest Philadelphia, one SEPTA trolley is delivering more than just passengers—it’s spreading smiles along the way. Tracy Holmes-Williams, a veteran trolley operator of 26 years, has turned her Route 36 trolley into a rolling hub of encouragement and joy. Lined with handwritten notes and uplifting quotes, the trolley greets riders with messages like “Have a wonderful day!” and “Smile, and the whole world smiles with you.”

Tracy’s goal is simple: to brighten someone’s day, no matter what they’re going through. She even flashes heart signals to fellow operators as they pass, hoping to lift their spirits, too. With a dose of Philly pride and plenty of heart, her trolley has become a local favorite. Riders often thank her for the cheerful atmosphere, which she says makes her proud to do what she loves. For Tracy, positivity is more than a motto—it’s a daily ride worth sharing.
