Public Pushback Ends Goose Gassing Plan

After mounting pressure from animal rights advocates and state lawmakers, Michigan has officially halted a controversial program to euthanize Canada geese using gas. The plan, which would have allowed the roundup of thousands of geese during their molting season, faced intense backlash over its perceived inhumanity and disproportionate scope.

State wildlife officials confirmed that no geese will be collected or euthanized in 2025, and all permit applications are now paused. Instead, the Department of Natural Resources will revisit humane solutions, like nest control and scare tactics. Advocates say it’s a big win for wildlife—and a reminder that public voices can lead to more compassionate conservation.
