Retired Police Dog Honored for Heroic Rescue on Birthday Walk

Bear, a retired police dog celebrated for his lifesaving efforts during his service, added another heroic act to his legacy on his 12th birthday. While out walking with his owners, retired police officers Julia and Ian Pope, Bear located a missing vulnerable man in dense undergrowth near Eastbourne. The man, cold and disoriented, was safely led to help by Bear, whose quick action came after weeks of recovery from major surgery.

Recognized with the Thin Blue Paw Foundation’s Lifesaver Award, Bear’s accomplishment highlights his continued dedication even in retirement. Julia expressed her pride, noting Bear’s earlier rescues during his career with Sussex Police. The award ceremony brought together his former handler, Iain Sutherland, and colleagues who celebrated his remarkable contributions. Bear, now serving as a trauma support dog, stands as a testament to the enduring impact of working dogs and the support they deserve in retirement.
