Rockstar Proves Compassion Matters More Than Secrecy

Rockstar Games has reportedly granted early access to Grand Theft Auto 6 for a terminally ill fan who was given only six to twelve months to live after battling cancer, proving that even one of gaming’s most secretive companies will make exceptions when compassion calls. The heartwarming story began when Anthony Armstrong, a Ubisoft Toronto game developer, made an emotional public plea on LinkedIn on behalf of a close family member who is a huge Grand Theft Auto fan and may not survive until the game’s scheduled November 19, 2026 release date. Armstrong reached out directly to Rockstar employees and Rockstar Toronto offering to sign strict NDAs and requesting a private playtest so his family member could experience the game once before passing, explaining that in the best case scenario the fan would be leaving us the same month the game launches. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick personally reached out in response to the viral LinkedIn post, and Armstrong later updated the thread saying we spoke to them today and got great news but that’s all I can really say, thank you all from the bottom of my heart before the posts were deleted likely due to non disclosure agreements.

The gaming community celebrated Rockstar’s decision with fans across the world praising the studio for making an exception despite its legendary reputation for secrecy and strict policies around unreleased games, showing that behind massive franchises are people who still value kindness. This is not the first time Rockstar has opened its doors during difficult times, as the studio previously allowed another terminally ill fan to get their hands on Red Dead Redemption 2 before its official launch date back in 2018 in a similar act of compassion. While millions of fans worldwide will have to wait until November to play what is being called the most highly anticipated game of all time, this touching moment reminds everyone that video games are more than just entertainment and that game developers can use their power to create meaningful experiences and bring joy to people facing their final days.
