Santa Superman And Spiderman Surprises Kids

The Sandy Springs Fire Department in Georgia continued its heartwarming Christmas tradition for the third year by rappelling down the walls of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta dressed as Santa Superman and Spiderman to surprise pediatric patients who cannot leave their rooms during the holiday season. Department Section Chief Kyle Sweeney says the simple interaction has a huge impact reminding firefighters why they chose their career in the first place since they are used to showing up on people’s worst days and having the opportunity to bring joy instead is incredibly powerful and rewarding. The event started in 2018 when the department realized Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta served the whole city but was located close to their fire station and after some planning with the right people they finally got the tradition off the ground or rather off the roof in 2022. Firefighter Cody Minter participated for the first time this year after his son was diagnosed with cancer in 2024 and though treatment thankfully did not last long enough for his family to see the event they witnessed the impact it had on little patients seeing heroes appear outside their windows.

On December 19th heroes real and mythical latched ropes onto their harnesses and descended to glass windows of children’s rooms waving and high-fiving through the glass creating unforgettable moments where you can see surprise turn into excitement almost instantly according to Sweeney. The event has grown over three years with support from organizations including Georgia State Fire Marshal’s Office Georgia Sprinkler Association Cherokee Fire Department Atlanta Fire Department Georgia Power Mileshko Photography and local sports teams like the Atlanta Braves Falcons and Hawks. After rappelling Santa walks through the hospital delivering gifts many donated by Sandy Springs citizens which makes the experience even more special for families going through difficult times during the holidays. Sweeney says every year it becomes more meaningful and the reactions from kids remind the team that even small moments can make a lasting difference proving that bringing smiles to sick children is one of the most rewarding things firefighters get to do all year.
