School Goes Viral Where Every Person Learned A New Language

Something remarkable is unfolding at a small elementary school in New Hampshire, and it started with one seven-year-old boy who simply wanted someone to talk to. Ben O’Reilly is deaf and has additional special needs, and as the only deaf student in his entire school district, his early days at Campton Elementary were marked by a quiet kind of isolation that his aide described as genuinely heartbreaking to witness day after day. Outside of the two of them, there was almost no one in the building Ben could communicate with at all, and it showed in the way he moved through each school day, always at the edges of things rather than inside them. Then a handful of his classmates made a decision that would eventually change the whole school.

A small group of kids began learning basic sign language entirely on their own, saying it was simply fun to finally be able to play and talk with Ben the same way they did with everyone else in the room. Word spread to the rest of the class almost immediately, then moved to teachers across multiple grade levels, and eventually worked its way through the entire building until signing became a natural part of how the school operated even in rooms Ben never entered. His two adoptive mothers say they have been completely overwhelmed by the love and sustained effort the school community has shown their son, and the story has now reached people far beyond their small New Hampshire town. His aide says the most powerful thing she gets to witness every single day is watching a boy who once sat at the edges of everything quietly discover, through hundreds of small signed conversations, that he belongs exactly where he is.
