Scientists Just Found The Fossilized Remains Of A Snake That May Have Been Up To 50 Feet Long

Paleontologists working in India have announced the discovery of one of the largest snakes ever to have lived on Earth, a prehistoric giant called Vasuki indicus that slithered across what is now the state of Gujarat roughly 47 million years ago and is estimated to have reached a staggering length of between 36 and 49 feet. The discovery was made by researchers Debajit Datta and Sunil Bajpai, who studied 27 remarkably well-preserved fossilized vertebrae recovered from a lignite mine in the Kutch district of Gujarat, with some of the bones still connected in the position they occupied in life. Based on the dimensions of those vertebrae, scientists calculated a total body length that places Vasuki indicus in the same extraordinary size range as Titanoboa, the largest snake species ever discovered, which lived in Colombia around 60 million years ago. The snake was named after Vasuki, the mythical serpent of Hindu tradition associated with the deity Shiva.

Unlike the fast, active hunters seen in many large modern snakes, Vasuki indicus appears to have been built for a different strategy entirely. Its thick, cylindrical body and massive weight suggest it moved slowly and relied on ambush, lying in wait before striking, similar to modern anacondas, which are also among the heaviest snakes alive today. The species belonged to an ancient family called madtsoiidae that survived for nearly 100 million years across Africa, Europe, and Asia before going extinct, and the researchers believe Vasuki indicus may represent a lineage that first evolved on the Indian subcontinent before spreading westward into southern Europe and Africa during the warm Eocene period. The study, published in Scientific Reports, adds a new titan to the short and awe-inspiring list of the largest creatures ever to have lived on land.
