Scream 7 Shatters 30-Year Franchise Record On Opening Night

Horror fans showed up in a big way Thursday night. Scream 7, the seventh installment in Paramount and Spyglass’ iconic 30-year-old slasher franchise, shattered franchise preview records with $7.8 million on opening night, surpassing Scream VI’s previous record of $5.7 million. The film is now tracking for a domestic opening weekend somewhere between $40 million and $60 million, with many projections pointing toward $45 million to $50 million. If it lands near the top of that range, it will dethrone Scream VI’s $44.4 million debut to become the biggest opening weekend in franchise history. Globally, the film is eyeing a $60 million launch across 52 international markets, and the entire series is on the cusp of becoming a billion-dollar franchise.

Much of the excitement centers on the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, who sat out Scream VI due to a pay dispute and is now back in the lead role she’s played since the original 1996 film. Original franchise creator Kevin Williamson, who wrote the screenplay for the first two Scream films, steps behind the camera as director for the first time and he brought back a stacked cast of familiar faces. Many returning characters include Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, David Arquette, and Matthew Lillard, alongside exciting newcomers like Isabel May, McKenna Grace, and Joel McHale. In another first for the franchise, Scream 7 is playing in IMAX, giving fans the an immersive Ghostface experience. Audiences are responding enthusiastically with a strong 79% audience score, proving this beloved franchise still has plenty of scares left to give.
