Sharing Inherited Land With The Community

The Éprinchard family in France looked at their inherited field that had been sitting empty for years with nobody living there or caring for it and asked themselves a simple question: what is the point of keeping this land if it cannot serve anyone else? Their answer took the form of a remarkable promise to donate the entire property to create a community orchard where all 560 residents of Clussais-la-Pommeraie in western France could harvest free fruit for themselves. Michel Éprinchard explained to French media that the first condition was creating an orchard with specific varieties of fruit trees, but the second and most important condition was that the entire community could benefit from it and that it would be shared among everyone. The proposal reached Mayor Étienne Fouché and the town council who accepted the donation and committed to investing close to 10,000 euros to transform the field into a community orchard with free access for all residents.

Today the terrain looks completely different with about 50 fruit trees including apple, pear and plum trees already planted where there used to be only an empty field. Within one year there will be almost 100 trees accompanied by flowers, flowering trees and a country hedge that protects and shapes the space. The orchard will take about four years before the first harvests arrive, but nobody seems impatient because the project is already fulfilling its function of bringing people together and returning the land to common use. Children from the town participated in planting some of the trees which one neighbor called magnificent and wonderful, and as recognition a plaque with the Éprinchard family name will be installed at the entrance to the orchard when it opens.
