South African Couple Rescues Over 2,500 Pugs, Giving Dogs a Second Chance

Cheryl and Malcolm Gaw never planned to dedicate their retirement to pugs, but fate had other ideas. After rescuing their first pug in 2008, their passion for the breed grew into Pug Rescue South Africa, a sanctuary in Johannesburg that has saved over 2,500 pugs in need. Now home to nearly 200 dogs, the center provides care for pugs who have been abandoned, surrendered due to high vet costs, or need medical attention.

The daily routine at the rescue is a carefully orchestrated symphony of feeding, grooming, playtime, and medical care. With vet bills reaching $40,000 a year, the Gaws are constantly working to rehabilitate and rehome their furry residents. Despite the challenges, Cheryl finds endless joy in their antics.

However, she warns prospective owners to be prepared for the breed’s health issues and relentless shedding. Owning a pug means constant companionship, a fur-covered wardrobe, and a commitment to their well-being. For the Gaws, the reward is seeing each rescued pug find a loving home and a second chance at happiness.
