Spirit Shut Down So A Rival Airline Gave Him The Send-Off He Deserved

Captain Jon Jackson had it all planned out. After a career spanning decades as a commercial airline pilot, his final flight was scheduled for May 2 from Fort Lauderdale to Baltimore, with the traditional water cannon salute waiting for him at the other end. Then, at 3 a.m. that morning, Spirit Airlines ceased all operations, canceling every flight in its system, effective immediately. Jackson’s retirement flight, the last leg of his entire career, simply didn’t happen. He flew to Baltimore the only way he could: as a passenger on Southwest Airlines. What he didn’t know was that his son Chris, a Southwest pilot, had quietly let the crew know what was going on. “Chris casually mentioned to the flight’s pilots that this would have been his dad’s retirement flight,” Southwest wrote on Facebook. “They seized the opportunity to change the course of the day.”

When the Southwest flight touched down in Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, the airport’s Fire & Rescue team was waiting on the tarmac with a full water cannon salute, the one Jackson never got at Spirit. He stepped off the plane and was handed a bottle of champagne by Southwest staff. Then, over the gate loudspeaker, came an announcement: “Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Jon Jackson!” — followed by applause from employees and strangers alike. Jackson, visibly moved, addressed the crowd. “As Spirit goes down, this is a sad day,” he said. “And you guys made it incredible — so thank you so much.” Southwest later posted about the moment: “This was about honoring a fellow aviator. Congratulations, and thank you for your service in the skies, Captain Jackson.” The aviation community, it turns out, takes care of its own.
