Thailand Just Rediscovered A Species Everyone Thought Was Gone

Researchers in Thailand are celebrating an incredible discovery after camera traps photographed a rare flat headed cat that hasn’t been seen in the country for almost 30 years. The adorable endangered feline, named for its unusually flattened forehead, was captured on camera at Princess Sirindhorn Wildlife Sanctuary during 2024 and 2025, marking the first confirmed sightings in Thailand since 1995. These mysterious cats are among the smallest wild felines in Southeast Asia, weighing only about 4.4 pounds, which is less than most domestic cats. Scientists know very little about how these secretive animals live because they are so rarely seen by humans, though they have webbed feet perfect for hunting fish in waterlogged wetland habitats.

The camera traps photographed several individual cats including a female with her cub, proving that flat headed cats are not only surviving in southern Thailand but also successfully breeding there. Conservationists describe the discovery as a major win after decades of sustained protection efforts, strong scientific partnerships, and dedicated community care for wildlife areas. The species primarily faces threats from habitat loss as wetlands and lowland forests disappear, along with other human pressures like overfishing and hunting. This rediscovery gives scientists hope that conservation efforts can bring endangered species back from the brink, especially when communities work together to protect wild spaces where rare animals can thrive.
