Thailand Poised to Recognize Same-Sex Marriage

Thailand is on the brink of a historic milestone as it moves closer to becoming the first nation in Southeast Asia to legally recognize same-sex marriage. Following a resounding vote of approval from 130 of the 152 senators, the marriage equality bill is now awaiting endorsement from King Maha Vajiralongkorn, which is expected to be a formality. This landmark legislation, which equates the legal rights of LGBTQ+ and straight couples, marks the culmination of two decades of persistent advocacy by activists. With the bill set to be enacted 120 days after publication in the royal gazette, Thailand could see its first legally recognized same-sex marriages by the end of the year, representing a significant leap forward for LGBTQ+ rights in Asia.
