The 22,000 Computers That Are Changing Everything for Blind Americans

In a world where screens dominate our daily lives, a Dallas-based nonprofit called Computers for the Blind is ensuring that vision loss never becomes a barrier to digital independence by transforming donated computers into life-changing tools for thousands across America. The organization refurbishes computers and equips them with powerful accessibility software like JAWS, which converts text to speech, and ZoomText, which magnifies screen content, creating gateways to independence that would otherwise be financially out of reach for many. For recipients like Antoinette McDonald Ellis, receiving one of these specially equipped computers was nothing short of transformational, when she first turned it on and heard it speak to her, she felt like she “grew three or four inches” with newfound confidence.

The nonprofit has shipped nearly 22,000 computers nationwide, with each one making a significant difference in someone’s life by providing not just hardware, but comprehensive training and ongoing support that ensures users can navigate the digital world with confidence. Employee Marci Duty, who is completely blind herself, understands the impact firsthand and plays a key role in helping ship these computers across the country, knowing that each delivery represents freedom, opportunity, and connection for someone who might otherwise be excluded from today’s tech-driven society. The organization’s mission extends far beyond providing equipment, it’s about restoring a sense of community, creativity, and belonging for people who are often underserved in our fast-paced digital world. As Ellis beautifully expressed, these computers don’t just provide technology; they provide “the ability to go and feel like I’m part of this 21st-century world.”
