The Ancient Animal That Just Sparked A Modern Agricultural Revolution

On the dusty outskirts of Mogadishu, something extraordinary is happening that could transform Somalia’s entire agricultural future. Beder Camel Farm represents a new generation of modern camel dairies where traditional heritage meets cutting-edge innovation, turning an age-old resource into a thriving business. Somalia is home to over 7 million camels, more than any other country on Earth, but until recently only a tiny fraction of their milk ever reached urban grocery stores.

Now, through better veterinary care, improved feed, and modern milking practices, each camel at Beder produces up to 10 liters of milk daily, double what traditional herders typically achieve. The farm has created Somalia’s first camel milk yogurt factory, employing nearly 200 full-time staff and selling their Beder brand products in supermarkets across Mogadishu. As Dr. Abdirisak Mire Hashi, the farm’s veterinarian and manager explains that this isn’t just about profit, it’s about preserving Somali heritage while embracing progress. The initiative is creating jobs, improving nutrition, and building pride in local products, proving that the most sustainable revolutions often build on the foundations of ancient wisdom.
