The Glowing Comeback That’s Bringing Joy to Summer Evenings

If summer evenings in Michigan seem unusually magical this year, there’s a beautiful reason behind the extra sparkle: fireflies are experiencing an incredible population boom thanks to perfect weather conditions. Warm, wet conditions over the past year have created ideal circumstances for these beloved insects, leading to spectacular displays that some cyclists describe as feeling like “jumping to hyperspace in a Star Wars movie” when riding through clouds of glowing fireflies. For many Michigan residents, this summer’s firefly explosion is bringing back cherished childhood memories of catching the twinkling insects in jars and using them as natural lanterns during backyard adventures.

The timing couldn’t be more perfect, as many people had noticed fewer fireflies in recent years and worried about what happened to these magical creatures that defined summer nights in the 1980s and 90s. Michigan is home to 24 different types of fireflies, though only 17 produce the visible glow that creates those enchanting evening light shows. Conservation efforts are making a difference too, with residents planting native gardens and reducing pesticide use to help protect firefly habitat. One Lansing resident who focused on creating a pollinator-friendly yard says watching her backyard fill with dancing fireflies has been incredibly rewarding, proving that community efforts to bring them back are working and creating new magical moments for the next generation.
