The Messages That Whales Are Sending To Humans

For the first time in history, SETI scientists have documented humpback whales deliberately creating bubble rings during interactions with humans, revealing what could be the most sophisticated attempt at interspecies communication ever recorded. Like underwater smoke rings, these intelligent marine mammals actively blow circular bubble formations when boats and swimmers approach, behavior that researchers believe represents conscious efforts to engage with humans rather than typical feeding or mating activities. Dr. Laurance Doyle from the SETI Institute explains that this curious whale behavior supports a central assumption in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence: that intelligent beings would actively seek contact with other intelligent species.

The groundbreaking study, published in Marine Mammal Science, analyzed 12 episodes involving 39 bubble rings created by 11 individual whales from different populations worldwide, proving this isn’t isolated behavior but a widespread phenomenon. These humpbacks live in complex societies, use bubble tools for hunting, and even help other species escape predators, but the bubble rings directed at humans appear to be something entirely different – possibly play, communication, or attempts to gauge human responses. Marine photographer Jodi Frediani from UC Davis emphasizes the remarkable combination of curiosity and intelligence these encounters represent, as whales voluntarily approach boats and swimmers specifically to create these aquatic messages. The WhaleSETI team believes studying these non-human, aquatic intelligence systems could help develop better methods for detecting and analyzing potential signals from extraterrestrial civilizations, making our oceans a training ground for understanding alien communication.
