The Supreme Court Said The Tariffs Were Illegal, Now FedEx And UPS Are Sending Money Back

Here is some genuinely good news for your wallet. In February, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a sweeping set of tariffs that had been driving up prices on imported goods were unconstitutional — and now the refund process has officially begun. This week, the federal government opened a portal allowing companies to file claims for money back, and two of the biggest names in shipping wasted no time making a promise: FedEx and UPS both announced on Tuesday that any tariff refunds they receive from the government will be passed directly back to the customers who originally paid them. No action required on your end — both companies said they will handle the filing on customers’ behalf and issue refunds automatically once the government processes the claims. DHL made the same pledge. About $166 billion in tariff collections are now subject to potential refunds, making this one of the largest consumer reimbursement events in recent memory.

The timeline requires some patience as the government has indicated refunds could take up to 60 to 90 days to reach the shippers after claims are approved, and the shippers can only pass money back after they receive it. But for small business owners like Kacie Wright, who runs a Texas-based musical instrument shop and watched her import costs climb for months, the news is a relief. “I hope they process the refunds,” she told CBS News. UPS alone collected approximately $5 billion worth of tariffs from customers. With thousands of companies filing claims and the machinery now in motion, the message to everyday consumers and small businesses is clear: the money is on its way back.
