The VA Launched a First-of-Its-Kind Therapy Study

The Department of Veterans Affairs has launched its first clinical study exploring MDMA-assisted therapy for veterans living with both PTSD and alcohol use disorder. The research will evaluate how this psychedelic compound, known for promoting emotional openness and reducing fear, might enhance psychotherapy for those who’ve struggled to find relief through traditional methods.

Participants in the study will receive guided therapy sessions where MDMA is used under clinical supervision—not as a standalone drug, but as a tool to deepen the impact of therapy. The study reflects growing interest in how psychedelics could support mental health recovery. DAV members have even passed a resolution encouraging the VA to move forward with psychedelic research for conditions like PTSD and traumatic brain injury. Veterans are advised to speak with their health care providers and avoid using psychedelics outside of approved medical settings.

If the results are promising, this could open the door to an entirely new form of treatment for those who need it most.
