They Were Endangered Since The 1980s But They Are BACK

Green turtles have made a remarkable recovery from the brink of extinction in what scientists are calling a major conservation victory after decades of being hunted extensively for turtle soup, eggs, and decorative shells. Once listed as endangered since the 1980s with populations plummeting worldwide, new data shows these ancient mariners are finally rebounding thanks to five decades of dedicated global conservation efforts. The success came through a combination of beach patrols protecting nesting females and their eggs, releasing hatchlings safely into the ocean, education programs to reduce hunting, and innovative measures to prevent accidental capture in fishing nets. Scientists say this triumph should serve as inspiration and proof that focused conservation work can reverse even the most dire situations facing endangered species.

However, the journey is far from over, as green turtles remain well below their historic population numbers and still face ongoing threats from climate change, habitat loss, and fishing activities. In places like Raine Island in Australia, fewer baby turtles are successfully hatching, showing that conservation efforts cannot slow down despite recent gains. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature officially downgraded green turtles from Endangered to Least Concern on their Red List, marking a significant milestone while acknowledging the work that still needs to be done. Professor Brendan Godley from the University of Exeter emphasized that hundreds of thousands of people working for decades have undoubtedly made an impact on these iconic and charismatic creatures, giving real cause for optimism about what dedicated conservation can achieve.
