This College Just Promised Free Tuition to Thousands of Students Nationwide

Starting in 2026, Reed College in Oregon will offer free tuition to students across the U.S. whose families earn less than $100,000 a year. The move expands an existing program that originally covered only Oregon and Washington residents and could cut the $71,000 tuition bill to zero for thousands of families.

The initiative, known as the Reed Promise, is expected to benefit about 25% of Reed’s incoming students once it goes nationwide. The college says it will also consider helping with room, board, and other expenses based on financial need. Even students from families earning up to $200,000 may qualify for partial aid.

To remain eligible, students will need to verify their income and stay enrolled full time. Reed’s leaders say the goal is to attract bright, curious minds and remove the financial barriers that often stand in the way of opportunity. With nearly two-thirds of Reed students already receiving financial aid, this expansion is set to make a significant impact.
