This Family’s Got Brains—A Second Child Genius Joins the Club

A New Jersey family just welcomed its second child into Mensa, the exclusive high-IQ society—and he’s only five years old. Maddox Lopez, a math-loving kindergartener who already knows his times tables and explores coding for fun, recently earned membership with a Mensa-level IQ. He now joins his older sister Declan, who was accepted last year, making the Lopez household home to not one, but two young prodigies.

While Declan has a passion for learning across subjects, Maddox is drawn to numbers and technology, often solving problems through video games and creative thinking. Their parents, Meachel and Delano Lopez, say nurturing curiosity has been key—especially during the pandemic, when Meachel created a structured learning schedule to keep their minds active. Delano, a teacher and Mensa member himself, credits his wife’s dedication for their children’s love of learning.

At home, the focus is on humility, joy, and letting the kids lead with their interests.
