This Perfect Match Between Two Amputees

When Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies found Cleo the dog, shot and severely injured in Phoenix, they never imagined her tragic story would lead to one of the most perfect adoption matches in rescue history. Originally named Mika, the brave dog’s front leg had to be amputated due to her gunshot wounds, and she spent months recovering at the MASH Unit while waiting for the right adopter to come along. That perfect person turned out to be Zack Monticello, who lost his arm in a UTV crash in 2024 and said meeting Cleo felt like pure fate when he visited the shelter.

The instant connection between the two amputees amazed everyone at the rescue, with Sergeant Gary Miller describing it as “a match made in heaven” and marveling at how quickly they bonded and clicked together. Both Cleo and Zack understand the challenges of adapting to life with missing limbs, creating an extraordinary understanding between them that goes beyond typical pet-owner relationships. Their story proves that sometimes the most beautiful connections come from shared experiences of overcoming adversity, and that healing often happens when two souls who understand struggle find each other. The MASH Unit continues to care for many other animals available for adoption with no fees, but Cleo’s story stands as a testament to the magic that can happen when the right rescue finds the right person at exactly the right moment.
