This Pill Could Give Dogs an Extra Year of Life—And Humans Might Be Next

A biotech startup in San Francisco is developing a once-daily pill that could add an extra year of healthy life to dogs. The company, Loyal, recently received a key approval from the FDA, marking a major step toward releasing the world’s first longevity drug for pets. Their treatment targets metabolic decline, mimicking the benefits of caloric restriction without suppressing appetite.

Initially designed for dogs over 10 years old and 14 pounds, the pill could hit the market as early as next year under an accelerated approval pathway. Backed by $150 million in funding, Loyal is already running trials on over 1,000 dogs. Founder Celine Halioua believes dogs are just the beginning—and hopes the research will lead to human applications in the future.

As science begins treating aging itself as a condition, this furry first step could pave the way for a broader longevity revolution.
