This Preschooler’s Response To A School Lesson Is Saving Dogs In Michigan

A four-year-old boy from Oxford, Michigan, turned a simple school lesson about charity into a month-long fundraising campaign that has raised over $300 and collected more than 30 items for his local dog shelter. Easton Peterson decided after learning about giving back in September that he wanted to help dogs at K9 Stray Rescue League, even returning pop cans to contribute every dollar he could to the cause. His mother Alexandra took to social media to support his mission and received an overwhelming outpouring of donations that exceeded everyone’s expectations for such a young philanthropist. The K9 Stray Rescue League, which has operated in Oxford for more than 30 years and rescues dogs primarily from Detroit Animal Care and Control, typically adopts out around 300 dogs annually and is currently caring for about 30 dogs at the shelter plus several more in foster homes.

Lead evaluator and trainer Kelly Barker said Easton’s fundraiser came as an unexpected surprise that deeply touched everyone at the shelter. She expressed her love for seeing children get involved in animal welfare, especially a four-year-old showing such remarkable empathy, compassion, and interest in helping dogs at such a young age. All of Easton’s donations will go directly toward food and medical care for the dogs they rescue, which is critical since the non-profit operates strictly on donations to keep their doors open. His father Chad Peterson said it’s beautiful to see that innocence in the world and watch his son get so excited about making a difference, knowing that this compassion will likely carry forward throughout his entire life.
