This State Made History With Free Child Care

New Mexico just made history by becoming the first state in America to guarantee completely free universal child care to every family, regardless of income level, with the revolutionary program launching November 1st. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s groundbreaking initiative removes all income eligibility requirements from the state’s child care assistance program and eliminates family copayments entirely, fulfilling a promise made when the state created its Early Childhood Education and Care Department in 2019. The program will save New Mexican families an average of $12,000 per child every year, providing massive financial relief while supporting workforce participation and economic growth across the state.

Previously, New Mexico had expanded free child care access to families earning below 400 percent of the federal poverty level, but now every single family qualifies regardless of their financial situation. The state is investing millions of dollars to construct, expand, and renovate child care facilities while estimating they’ll need an additional 5,000 early childhood professionals to fully achieve this universal system. Michelle Kang, president of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, praised New Mexico for “showing that it can be done” and leading the way for communities nationwide. This historic achievement proves that universal child care isn’t just a dream but a achievable reality that supports children, families, businesses, and educators while demonstrating what’s possible when states prioritize investment in their youngest citizens.
