This Stray Cat Walked Into Third Grade And Never Left

A lovable orange stray cat named Tombi appeared on the grounds of a public elementary school in Izmir, Turkey, and after spending a few weeks in the school garden seeking attention from children, he boldly ventured straight into teacher Ivaşcu’s third grade classroom where students immediately adored him. Unlike most concerns that a classroom cat might distract students, the opposite happened as Tombi’s presence kept children more engaged and eager to come to school, helping them stay focused between lessons while growing more responsible as they cared for him and bringing calmer, happier energy into the room. Tombi thrived in his new role, enjoying a safe place to rest, regular veterinary care, and dozens of little friends who loved him, until trouble surfaced when one parent complained that having a stray cat in the classroom posed a health risk. School officials ordered Tombi’s removal, breaking the hearts of the entire class and devastating Tombi himself, who wouldn’t eat in the home arranged for him and seemed deeply unhappy even at Ivaşcu’s house despite the students writing letters to cheer him up.

Finally, Ivaşcu shared Tombi’s story online where it quickly gained widespread support and reached local news outlets, with the outpouring of encouragement helping change minds including the parent who originally objected, prompting the school to reverse its decision. The reunion proved joyful as students celebrated and Tombi immediately settled back into his role as beloved classroom companion, making such a profound impact that Ivaşcu later wrote and published a book inspired by him. Years later when Ivaşcu moved abroad, she refused to leave Tombi behind, taking the once-stray cat who chose a classroom with her to continue their journey together. The orange cat who wandered into third grade looking for friends found not just a temporary home but a family, proving that sometimes the best teachers have four legs and the loudest purr.
