This Texas Vending Machine Sells Original Art For One Dollar

Somewhere in Austin, Texas, a perfectly ordinary-looking vending machine is about to make someone’s day in a completely unexpected way. Drop in a dollar or two, press a button, and instead of a bag of chips, out comes a tiny original work of art the size of your palm. That is the idea behind Austin Mini Art, a project launched by married couple Heather Ozzy and Chris Prince with a simple and generous goal: make real local art affordable enough for everyone. The palm-sized prints, which range from one to three dollars each, are created by local artists and feature everything from Austin’s famous bat bridge to cowboy boots to a simple cup of coffee.

The couple started the project after years of wanting to buy local art but never quite being able to afford it, so they bought a vintage vending machine off the internet, repainted it, and filled it with the work of a local artist they admired. The very first machine they placed in an Austin shop caused such an immediate frenzy that customers were sprinting to a nearby bank just to get enough quarters to use it. Now, more than a year later, Austin Mini Art has grown to five machines across the city, more than 120 designs, partnerships with beloved local brands, and over 45,000 prints sold. One devoted collector has gathered more than a hundred prints, which she keeps carefully organized in a binder, and says the small ritual of hunting for new ones gave her something joyful to look forward to during a difficult period in her life. Ozzy and Prince say they are already exploring expanding to other cities, but for now, they are happy bringing a little beauty to people’s days one tiny print at a time.
