This Wouldn’t Have Happened To Leonardo DiCaprio, The Story Of The Lost Oscar

It started as a bureaucratic nightmare and ended as one of the most absurd comeback stories of the week. Pavel Talankin, the Russian-born director who won Best Documentary Feature at the 2026 Academy Awards for Mr Nobody Against Putin, was stopped at New York’s JFK Airport on Wednesday when TSA agents refused to let him carry his Oscar onto a Lufthansa flight to Germany, declaring the 8.5-pound golden statuette a potential weapon. Talankin, who had flown with the Oscar on more than a dozen flights since March without incident, watched as Lufthansa staff bubble-wrapped it, stuffed it into a cardboard box, and checked it into the hold. When he landed in Frankfurt, the Oscar was gone. “It’s completely baffling how they consider an Oscar a weapon,” he said. Co-director David Borenstein took to Instagram. Executive producer Robin Hessman was on speaker phone “yelling at TSA.” The story went globally viral within hours. On Friday, Lufthansa said: “The Oscar statue has now been located and is safely in our care in Frankfurt.” The airline said it was arranging its return as quickly as possible and sincerely apologized.

The story is wild enough on its own, but the backdrop makes it even more remarkable. Mr Nobody Against Putin follows Talankin’s story as a teacher who documented the Kremlin’s push to impose pro-war propaganda on schoolchildren after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. He has since been exiled from Russia for his safety. The film won the Oscar and a BAFTA, and Russia has banned it on the grounds that it “propagates extremism.” Hessman summed the JFK incident up perfectly: “This wouldn’t have happened to Leonardo DiCaprio.”
