Truck Driver Honored for Heroic Act During Highway Shootout

Timothy VanNostrand, a 64-year-old logging truck operator from Northville, New York, became a hero when he used his truck to shield motorists and block the escape of a fugitive involved in a shootout with a state trooper on Interstate 88. Despite bullets flying during the 12-minute ordeal, VanNostrand’s quick thinking helped protect others until backup arrived, saving the injured trooper’s life.

Recognized as a Goodyear Highway Hero, VanNostrand’s actions highlight the selflessness of commercial drivers who often go beyond their duties to safeguard others. The annual Goodyear Highway Hero Award celebrates drivers like VanNostrand, acknowledging their critical role in keeping roads safe. Reflecting on his courage, VanNostrand humbly remarked, “Most of us in this industry would do the same thing. We look out for each other and everyone else.”
