Volunteer ‘Grandpas’ Are Helping Kids And Both Benefit

A group of retirees in New York is proving that giving back doesn’t just benefit the young—it can transform the lives of older adults, too. Grandpas United, founded in 2018, brings retired men together to mentor boys and young fathers through schools and community programs. From teaching chess to simply spending time during lunch breaks, the “grandpas” are offering guidance, support, and fun to kids who benefit from positive male role models.

But the impact goes both ways. Experts say this kind of volunteering improves mental sharpness, boosts mood, and even enhances brain health in older adults. Many of the men involved say they’ve found unexpected friendships and renewed purpose through the program. Studies show consistent volunteering can lead to increased brain activity, especially in men, along with a stronger sense of connection and wellbeing. For these grandfathers—and the boys they mentor—it’s a win-win rooted in kindness, purpose, and community.
