Volunteers Set New Record in Woodland Restoration Effort

A group of dedicated volunteers has set a new record by planting 1,100 trees in a single day as part of an ambitious woodland restoration project in Great Avon Wood near Bristol.

The 113-acre site, a collaboration between Avon Needs Trees and the Forest of Avon Trust, aims to enhance biodiversity, combat climate change, and reduce local flood risks. Since 2023, more than 31,000 trees have been planted, with a goal of reaching 35,000 soon.

The latest planting effort included native species like field maple, hawthorn, and white willow, ensuring a thriving and diverse ecosystem. Volunteers from the West of England Combined Authority contributed both time and funding to make the milestone possible.

“This record-breaking planting day is proof of what we can achieve together,” said Dave Wood, CEO of Avon Needs Trees, highlighting the impact of community-driven conservation efforts.

With a new heritage trail set to open later this year, Great Avon Wood is quickly becoming a landmark for rewilding and sustainability in the region.
