Washington Moves to Ban These Acts

A new bill passed in Washington state will ban the use of elephants, bears, big cats, and nonhuman primates in circuses and traveling shows, making it the 12th U.S. state to take this step. The legislation received bipartisan support and aims to protect wild animals from the harsh conditions of constant transport and performance demands. If signed into law by Governor Ferguson, the bill would prohibit acts that involve animals like Viola and Isa, two aging elephants who have long been part of touring circuses in the region.

Animal welfare advocates praised the move, calling it a compassionate response to growing concerns about the treatment of performance animals. Viola made headlines last year after escaping and running through traffic—her third escape attempt—highlighting the risks for both animals and the public. The bill follows similar actions in Maryland and Massachusetts, and groups like Humane World for Animals hope more states will follow suit. Once enacted, this law would mark a significant shift toward more humane entertainment across Washington.
