What This Teacher Did For 61 Years Broke A World Record

Glenda Akin, 84, has officially been certified by Guinness World Records as the longest serving female teacher at the same school after dedicating 61 years and 43 days to Westmoreland High School in Tennessee, where she worked both as a classroom teacher and later as the school librarian. The remarkable educator began her career in 1963 just months before President Kennedy’s assassination and taught through decades of incredible social and technological change, from the introduction of computers to classrooms all the way to the smartphone era that defines education today. Akin surpassed the previous male record holder by seven years and became the overall record holder for any teacher at a single school, watching generations of students pass through her classroom and even seeing some of them grow up to become her colleagues. Born on December 7, 1941, the very day Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and pulled America into World War II, Akin has lived through and taught students about some of the most defining moments in modern history.

After losing all of her family members over the years, Akin found a new family in the Westmoreland High School community, telling CBC Radio that she loved her job so much she never minded getting up and going to school every single day. The school has honored her incredible legacy by naming its library after her, and Principal Rick Duffer, who was actually one of her former students, said having his former teacher as a colleague was initially intimidating but they developed a wonderful working relationship. Akin’s dedication was so extraordinary that she even watched one of her students become a teacher at the school and then retire a full decade before Akin herself finally decided to hang up her teaching career in 2024. The 84 year old’s record breaking achievement proves that when you find your true calling in life and give your all to it, the impact on thousands of people can become absolutely astonishing and truly record worthy.
