When NPR Lost Its Federal Funding The Public Responded With Something Historic

When Congress eliminated all federal funding for public media, ending a tradition of bipartisan support that had stretched for more than half a century, many people wondered how NPR would survive the loss. The answer came in the form of one of the largest charitable gestures in public media history, as philanthropist Connie Ballmer stepped forward with an $80 million donation, the single largest gift from a living donor in the organization’s existence, specifically directed toward modernizing NPR’s technology and ensuring it can reach audiences across every platform they use today and in the decades ahead. A second anonymous donor added another $33 million to support public radio stations across the country with tools and services they need to keep serving their local communities. Together the two gifts total $113 million, the largest infusion of private support NPR has received since a transformative donation more than two decades ago.

Ballmer, who previously served on the NPR Foundation board, said she gave because an informed public is the foundation of society and that democracy depends on strong independent journalism being available to everyone. NPR’s CEO said the investment will put the network and its stations on solid financial footing for the future and allow the organization to deliver the public service journalism it is known for, meeting audiences wherever they choose to listen. The outpouring of support from the public has also been significant, with individual donations to NPR surging in the months since the federal funding was cut, signaling how deeply people value the service. What began as a moment of uncertainty for one of America’s most trusted news institutions has instead become a demonstration of what happens when a community decides it is not willing to let something that matters disappear.
