World’s Largest Archaeological Museum Finally Opens

A spectacular $1.2 billion museum showcasing the finest ancient Egyptian artifacts has finally opened in Giza after more than two decades of planning, construction, and dramatic setbacks that would have defeated any less determined project. The Grand Egyptian Museum houses an astounding 100,000 artifacts across 968,000 square feet of gallery space, making it the largest archaeological museum in the world devoted to a single civilization. The museum’s origin story is as remarkable as its contents, beginning when Egypt’s former culture minister became so angry at an Italian publisher who called Cairo’s existing museum a storage warehouse that he impulsively declared Egypt would build the world’s largest museum.

Construction faced nearly every obstacle imaginable, from the 2008 financial crisis and Arab Spring uprisings to regional conflicts, terrorist attacks, and COVID, causing the opening to be delayed at least five times since 2020. The stunning building from Irish architects Heneghan Peng aligns perfectly with the pyramids in the distance, incorporating triangular designs throughout the 120 acre site to honor ancient Egyptian mathematical precision. An entire 80,000 square feet is dedicated solely to King Tutankhamun, displaying all 5,600 items from his tomb together for the first time, including his legendary golden funerary mask. Among countless other treasures, visitors can marvel at a 30 foot tall statue of Ramses II and the 42 meter long funerary boat of Khufu dating to 2,500 BCE. Egyptian officials hope this magnificent showcase proves the country’s commitment to protecting its heritage and strengthens claims for artifacts like the Bust of Nefertiti to be returned from museums abroad.
