12-Year-Old’s Solar Blanket Design Could Transform Homeless Support

A young Glasgow student has combined creativity and compassion to tackle homelessness. Rebecca Young, a 12-year-old from Kelvinside Academy, designed a solar-powered heated blanket integrated into a backpack, inspired by witnessing people sleeping rough on Glasgow streets. Her innovation, developed into a prototype by engineering firm Thales, earned her the Commendation Medal in the UK’s Primary Engineer MacRobert Medal competition.

Rebecca’s design showcases the power of young minds addressing real-world issues. Her teacher, Leigh Goldie, praised her for applying STEM skills to meaningful change. As the prototype moves closer to potential production, Rebecca hopes her creation will bring warmth and dignity to those in need, inspiring others to take action against homelessness.
