95% Of People Carry This Virus For Life And Scientists Just Found A Way To Stop It

A virus that 95 percent of the global population carries silently for life has long resisted efforts to stop it, but scientists at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle have just announced a breakthrough that could finally change that. The Epstein-Barr virus, which most people encounter in childhood and which lies dormant in the body ever after, is linked to a range of serious long-term conditions including several cancers, multiple sclerosis, and certain neurological diseases, yet no approved treatment has ever existed to prevent or block it. Researchers at Fred Hutch tackled the problem using mice engineered to produce human antibodies, a technique that allowed them to identify powerful antibodies specifically designed to stop the virus before it can attach to and enter human immune cells. One of those antibodies completely prevented infection in lab models with human-like immune systems.

What makes the finding especially significant is that EBV is notoriously difficult to block, because unlike most viruses it finds a way to bind to nearly every type of B cell in the human immune system, making it an almost impossible target. The team identified two specific weak points on the virus and developed antibodies that exploit them, with one antibody fully blocking infection and another providing partial protection, offering researchers a roadmap for future vaccine design. The most immediate application would be protecting transplant patients, more than 128,000 of whom receive organ or bone marrow transplants in the United States each year and who face serious risk of EBV-related lymphoma when their immune systems are suppressed. Researchers are now working with an industry partner to move the discovery toward clinical trials, and the team says there is real momentum to turn this breakthrough into a therapy that could make a meaningful difference for patients.
