Expanding the Map of Ancient Woodlands

A comprehensive two-year survey conducted by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Northamptonshire has led to the remarkable discovery of over 1,300 hectares (approximately 3,271 acres) of previously unknown ancient woodlands. These woodlands, which have been standing since at least 1600, are now recognized as vital habitats for a diverse array of flora and fauna including forest-loving plants, fungi, insects, and microorganisms. The discovery has significantly increased the recorded area of ancient woodlands in these three counties to a total of 12,552 hectares (31,016 acres). This extensive project not only highlights the hidden natural treasures within the UK but also stresses the importance of protecting these ancient ecosystems, which cover approximately 2.5% of the UK’s land area. The newfound woodlands offer invaluable resources for environmental study and conservation efforts, showcasing a living legacy of natural history and biodiversity. The Wildlife Trust’s efforts underline the ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and the uncovering of ecological wonders right under our noses.
