Breaking Barriers: This Duo Team is One Race Away from Making History

For Michael Sayih and Max Fink, racing is more than just a sport—it’s a shared journey toward making history. The South Florida duo has competed in races across the world, with one goal in mind: to become one of the first Duo Teams to complete all six Abbott World Marathon Majors together.

Michael, who was born with cerebral palsy, started racing at age five with his father, Jim. Over the years, his passion grew, leading to the creation of Special Compass, a nonprofit that helps people with disabilities participate in athletic events. It was through this organization that Max met Michael, and the two quickly became racing partners and close friends.

Since then, they have conquered Chicago, New York, Boston, London, and Berlin, advocating for Duo Teams to be included in international races. Now, only Tokyo stands between them and their goal.

Tokyo will allow Duo Teams for the first time in March 2025, and Michael and Max will be one of three teams competing in the race. Reflecting on his experience, Michael shared, “It feels like my wheelchair is gone and I’m doing the running myself.” With their determination and bond, the finish line is just one more race away.
