ESPN Is Turning A Real Live Hockey Game Into A Pixar Movie

Hockey fans have seen some creative broadcasts over the years, but nothing quite like what ESPN and the NHL have cooked up for this spring. In a move that is sure to delight kids and parents alike, the two organizations are teaming up with Pixar to present a fully animated live hockey game called the Inside Out Classic. The real-time matchup between the Washington Capitals and the New York Rangers will be transformed into a full cartoon broadcast set entirely inside Hockey Island, a world built within the imagination of Riley, the beloved main character from the Inside Out films. As the actual players compete on the ice, animated versions of them will skate alongside Joy, Sadness, and the rest of the Emotions from the movie, all brought to life in real time using state-of-the-art motion capture technology provided by Sony.

Three ESPN commentators will wear full virtual reality headsets during the game to call the action from inside the animated world, and several of the original Inside Out voice actors will be on hand to join them for the broadcast. The collaboration is the latest in a growing trend of inventive alternate broadcasts designed to bring younger viewers into live sports, building on previous experiments that once turned an NBA game into a full Marvel superhero battle and helped make NFL games on Nickelodeon a genuine family tradition. Disney and the NHL actually piloted a similar concept back in 2023 with a Big City Greens themed animated hockey game, and the enthusiastic response from fans helped pave the way for this much larger and more ambitious follow-up. If it lands the way organizers are hoping, the Inside Out Classic could signal an exciting new era of family sports broadcasting that makes game night genuinely fun for every single person in the room.
