He Picked Up Trash Alone. Now He’s Leading a Community Effort.

When Michael Harvey stood alone with a bucket and trash picker at Kitsilano Beach, no one came to his community clean-up. But instead of giving up, he cleaned the beach himself—and shared the moment online. His video quickly went viral, drawing thousands of comments praising his commitment and offering support. So, he gave it another shot, inviting people to a second clean-up at Jericho Beach just a week later.

Despite heavy rain, over 30 people arrived—neighbors, students, and strangers inspired by Harvey’s message. Together, they braved the mud and weather to help clean the shoreline. Harvey called it a dream come true. “You are my community,” he said in a follow-up post. More clean-ups are already in the works, with volunteers promising to return and new faces eager to join. What started as a solo act of service is now turning into a growing movement.
