He Returned to School at 79 and Made Rutgers History

At 85 years old, Tom Maniscalco is about to become Rutgers University’s oldest-ever graduate. After dropping out more than six decades ago, he returned in his late seventies to finish what he started—one course at a time. Motivated by a promise to his late father, he pursued the mechanical engineering degree he once left behind, enrolling as a special student and quietly building toward a new milestone.

Though he already held degrees from NYU and beyond, this particular achievement brought long-awaited closure. His professor called him one of the most inspiring and engaged students he’d ever taught. With his master’s in hand, Maniscalco says he’s finally done with school—but certainly not with learning. Between his passion for WWII aircraft and race cars, and his leadership in engineering circles, this graduate isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
