One Life-Saving Gift, Two Nursing Degrees

For years, Ambrealle Brown dreamed of becoming a nurse—but a life-threatening kidney disease kept putting her plans on hold. After years of dialysis and fading hope, her mother, Nija Butler, stepped in with a life-saving gift: her kidney. That selfless act not only gave Brown a second chance at life, but also reignited her dream. In a remarkable turn of events, both mother and daughter enrolled in nursing school and graduated together this spring in Baton Rouge.

Their journey included Louisiana’s first robotic kidney transplant and months of studying side by side. Today, Brown is starting a job in a burns ICU, while Butler is continuing her work in psychiatric care. Their story is a moving reminder of resilience, family, and the incredible strength it takes to never give up.
