Record Year For Zero Rhino Poaching

India’s state of Assam reported zero rhino deaths from poachers in 2025, matching their success from 2023 and proving that serious protection efforts can save animals that were once nearly wiped out. The state’s leader called it a proud moment and shared other great wildlife news from 2025, including the first sighting of an Indian wild dog in Kaziranga National Park in 35 years and a rare golden colored tiger spotted in the same area. India now has about 4,000 rhinos after the population once dropped to just 1,800, with almost all of them living in Assam where poaching has dropped by 86% since 2016 thanks to tough laws and constant protection. Kaziranga National Park is home to about 2,613 rhinos, which represents roughly 70% of all the greater one horned rhinos left in the entire world, making it the most important place on Earth for keeping this species alive.

The amazing achievement came from using armed guards, security cameras with night vision, drones, and dog teams to protect the park, plus new laws that put repeat offenders in prison for life if they try to poach rhinos. Between 1980 and 2005, poachers killed 567 rhinos in the region for their horns, but the government’s zero tolerance approach has changed everything by showing poachers that they will face serious consequences. To send a powerful message that rhino horns have no real value, the government publicly burned a pile of 2,479 confiscated horns in September 2022, proving their commitment to ending the illegal trade. The rhino population has grown from just 600 animals in the 1960s to over 4,000 today, showing what can happen when people dedicate themselves to protecting wildlife for decades.
