Siberian Crane Makes a Remarkable Comeback

The critically endangered Siberian crane, one of the world’s rarest migratory birds, is making a strong recovery, with its population growing nearly 50% in the past decade. Thanks to habitat protection efforts along its eastern flyway between Russia and China, the crane’s numbers have risen from an estimated 3,500-4,000 in 2012 to approximately 7,000 today.

The International Crane Foundation, in collaboration with local organizations and with support from the Disney Conservation Fund, has worked to protect vital wetlands like China’s Lake Poyang, a key wintering site for the cranes. Efforts include habitat restoration, community engagement, and sustainable water management to ensure adequate feeding areas.

Although challenges like climate change and habitat loss persist, this recovery highlights the power of conservation partnerships. As Rich Beilfuss, president of the foundation, noted, “It’s a wonderful feeling to see this species thriving again, but there’s still much to do to secure their future.”
