Smart Underwear That Tracks Your Gas Was Just Invented

Scientists at the University of Maryland have created what might be the most unexpectedly useful invention of the year: smart underwear that tracks how often you pass gas, and yes, you read that correctly. The tiny device clips discreetly onto your underwear and monitors your gut bacteria activity around the clock, basically functioning like a fitness tracker but for something your body does way more often than you probably realize. Researchers convinced nearly 60 brave volunteers to wear the device for more than 11 hours a day, and the results were absolutely hilarious yet scientifically groundbreaking at the same time.

Ready for the punchline? Healthy adults actually toot an average of 32 times per day, more than double the 14 times that medical textbooks have been claiming for years, with some overachievers hitting 59 daily events while others clock in at just four. While this sounds like the setup to a joke, the invention could genuinely help millions of people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome and food intolerance by tracking hydrogen gas that gut microbes produce exclusively, giving doctors real data instead of relying on patients trying to remember something most people would rather forget. Researcher Brantley Hall points out that we have normal ranges for blood pressure and cholesterol but absolutely nothing for flatulence, which makes it impossible to know when someone’s digestive system is actually out of whack. Scientists are now planning something called the Human Flatus Atlas, which sounds like it belongs in a comedy sketch but will actually establish the first ever baseline for gut health and help evaluate whether probiotics and dietary changes are working, proving once and for all that the silliest sounding research can lead to the most important medical breakthroughs.
